CoinFlip secures Italian MiCA license as EU crypto transition period ends

CoinFlip has received a Crypto Asset Markets (MiCA) license from Italy’s securities regulator, allowing the US-based crypto platform to expand its services across the European Union as the bloc’s transition to its new crypto regulatory framework enters a new phase.

The approval came a day after the EU’s MiCA grandfathering expired. July 1It requires cryptoasset service providers (CASPs) operating on the blockchain to have MiCA authorization or stop offering regulated services.

The timing shows how firms are racing to position themselves under the EU’s harmonized crypto regime.

CoinFlip expands its footprint in Europe under MiCA

CoinFlip said it received the license from Italy’s Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB). It allows crypto services to be passported across EU member states under MiCA.

The company said its European operations will be headquartered in Milan. It described itself as Italy’s first international crypto asset service provider operating under the new regulatory framework.

Ben Weiss, CoinFlip’s chief executive, said the license provides a unified regulatory basis for the company to scale its services across Europe. It is also laying the groundwork for expanding its network across the continent, said Emanuele Carotti, regional manager for Italy.

License comes as MiCA enters full implementation phase

The announcement comes at a significant milestone for Europe’s crypto industry.

Open July 1The transition period under MiCA has officially ended across the EU. From that date, firms providing crypto asset services to EU clients without MiCA authorization are expected to cease providing regulated services.

Authorized providers are expected to complete the migration of existing customers under the new framework.

ESMA has instructed national regulators to ensure that unauthorized providers implement orderly closure plans. He also urged investors to verify whether crypto service providers have MiCA authorization before using their services.

The end of the transition period marks the transition from a patchwork of national crypto licensing regimes to a single regulatory framework. This allows authorized firms to operate across the bloc through passport rights.
