President today Donald Trump introduced aNational Artificial Intelligence Legislation Framework“It aims to gain federal oversight of the development of artificial intelligence. Many states have already enacted rules to guide AI use and development; some fear a patchwork approach in which all 50 states impose rules that could hinder AI development and its potential benefits.”
The AI policy aims to address six “key objectives”.
The White House added:
The Trump Administrator is doing all he can to WIN the AI race for America’s prosperity, security, and a new era of human flourishing. Achieving these goals requires a common-sense national policy framework: ensuring that American industry thrives while ensuring that ALL Americans benefit.
White House AI Czar David Sack He said that they look forward to turning the principles into legislation.
While it is a broad outline with many details to fill out, it is a starting point for the White House to work with Congress to turn the legislation into law.
Parliamentary leadership led by the Speaker mike johnsonposted a comment supporting the framework:
“AI has begun to demonstrate its potential to improve Americans’ lives. To ensure we continue to harness its potential and beat China in the global AI race, Congress must act. Today, the Trump Administration took a critical step to release a framework that gives Congress a roadmap to pursue legislation that provides much-needed certainty to innovators while protecting consumers and prioritizing children’s online safety.”
Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council (YSK Council) President Karen Kerrigan welcomed the framework, describing it as one that prioritizes innovation and economic growth under a unified federal governance approach.
“At a time when more than 1,500 AI-related bills have been introduced at the state and local levels, it is both timely and necessary for President Trump to acknowledge that a fragmented regulatory patchwork will undermine innovation and increase compliance costs,” Kerrigan said. “A coherent national framework and policies focused on supporting the adoption and diffusion of AI will provide additional confidence and support for small businesses and entrepreneurs, who are key drivers of innovation and job creation in the U.S. economy, to continue their investments in AI.”
Stuart Lacey, CEO MazeAI-native regulatory intelligence firm focused on permits and approvals says US has no AI innovation problem; There is an execution problem.
“AI policy is finally moving forward. The systems that approve things to be built are not. If we don’t modernize permitting, we’re putting a ruler on the entire AI economy.”
Concerns about AI getting out of control and the technology’s potential to transform”self-aware“, just like in the movies, has caused alarm in many segments of the electorate. This, and the potential for models to be driven by bias rather than balance, remain challenging variables in the development of AI. As technology is rapidly being incorporated into all aspects of individual and business activities, a well-thought-out approach is key to sustaining benign development. At the same time, effective AI policy will be quite elusive.
