Australia targets Telegram a day after Russia accuses Durov


Telegram is facing the heat! Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has filed a fine in the Federal Court over allegations that Telegram failed to remove terrorism-related content.

Interestingly, this came just a day after Russia accused founder Pavel Durov of aiding terrorism.

Australia sues Telegram over alleged pro-terrorism content

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner started A civil criminal lawsuit was filed against Telegram in Federal Court on Thursday. The platform has been accused of failing to act on reports of pro-terrorist content.

The regulator said its year-long review found some flagged material remained online for up to three weeks. It was stated that Telegram was unable to remove accounts, groups and channels that shared such content or identified known extremist images.

Telegram could face fines of up to AUD54.6 million ($35.8 million) if it is found to have violated the Online Safety Act.

The company did not officially respond. But a shameless x post is making the rounds.

Russia charges Durov over Telegram’s alleged terrorist activity

AMBCrypto was previously reported Russia’s Federal Security Service has accused Telegram founder Pavel Durov of helping facilitate terrorist activities. The FSB announced that it had officially charged him and an international arrest warrant had been issued.

Russian authorities claim that Telegram has failed to remove channels, group chats and bots allegedly used by Ukrainian intelligence, terrorist groups and extremist organizations. They say these tools support attack planning, recruitment and cyber fraud.

Durov is also being investigated in France over allegations that Telegram facilitates illegal activities.
