WEMIX, a blockchain ecosystem, reported that a major smart contract compromise occurred on July 26 after an attacker compromised owner privileges.
The attacker then minted and transferred approximately $6.25 million worth of WEMIX tokens, raising immediate concerns about protocol security. Additionally, the breach exposed vulnerabilities in privileged contract access rather than ordinary user wallets.


This discovery increased scrutiny of the project’s internal security controls. Meanwhile, the team identified the affected addresses and began working with exchanges and blockchain security firms to trace the funds.
The investigation is still ongoing and new findings may emerge. Ultimately, WEMIX must quickly contain the breach, strengthen contract security, and restore investor confidence through transparent updates.
On-chain transfers reveal attack flow
The attacker’s shift from using contracts to rapidly distributing stolen assets has increased the difficulty of recovering funds. After minting $5.23 million WEMIX, the attacker converted the tokens into 30,736 WEMIX and 724,198.27 USDC.e.


The funds were later transferred Ethereum (ETH) and before BNB Chain reaches ETH, Tether (USDT)and other entities. This series reduced direct viewability and increased the risk of wider distribution across multiple platforms.
Meanwhile, WEMIX tracked the attacker’s wallets and cooperated with exchanges with linked addresses that had already been frozen. These measures may slow additional transfers.
However, each successful cross-chain transfer further reduces the chances of recovery.
Can containment restore trust?
WEMIX then focused on lsimulating the possibility of greater losses In the ecosystem by tracking the location of missing funds.
The team immediately disabled all active WEMIX3.0 Bridge functions, disabled selected liquidity pools, and stopped other related functions from functioning to prevent transfer of funds in the future. This allowed investigators to gain additional time to trace the transaction history chain and contact exchange operators directly, who froze the attacker address accounts associated with the stolen assets.
Still, researchers continue to examine relevant contracts to uncover the attack path and close any remaining vulnerabilities. Technical measures may contain immediate threat. But restoring trust will require transparent communication, stronger security controls, and sustainable ecosystem stability over time.
